A New Year = Ch... Ch... Ch... Changes...

Ok, pardon the cheesy title, but it's true, and we all know it.  A new year brings new changes for our lives.  Usually all of us.  We often view January 1st with great mystery and potential, unless you are one of those people who will just look at tomorrow as just another Sunday...  I am one of the people who looks at January 1st with mystery and potential in my mind... Why...? Because the start of the new year can mean so much for us.

So many people are looking at 2012 to be "The Year!"  However, truth be told, a lot of us were also looking at 2011 to be "The Year!" maybe even 2010, 2009, 2008, etc... I guess the point I am trying to make is that the Start of a new year carries with it, at least in concept, so many possibilities and my guess is that those other "The Year!" moments haven't happened for so many of us, because we allowed our old self to get in the way of what we wanted our new self to be - and in case you didn't know, that old self is VERY stubborn.

If you are a believer, this is probably not a new concept for you.  It's also probably not a new concept for you if you are not a believer, it may just be a new lingo... It could also be considered our "comfort zone." Either way, it is where we stand/sit/exist when things in life are harder for us than we may have been ready for.  It's easy for us to go back to because its what we have always known, it's where have always gone back to...

Why do I bring this up...? Well, seeing as how the new year is upon us and I have already shared with you how I feel about January 1st, I wanted to share what is coming up for me and my family in what we are hoping to be the first of many new "The Years!"

For starters, you may have noticed that this is a new blog site, I am hoping that this will be a way to share many of my thoughts and ideas, as well as some things that are happening in our lives... I am also hoping that this will be an avenue of gathering feedback and ideas from anyone who is interested in sharing...

We are also starting a couple of things in this upcoming year that we are hoping to have a positive impact on our home life.

1. We are beginning, what we are calling, the 366 Day Purge...  (in case you didn't know, this is a leap year) I cannot take any credit for this idea, it is something that Aimee came up with as we have been talking about our lives over the past few months.  The premise is that we are going to get rid of one item in our house each day through out the year.  An interesting caveat is that we are both doing this as individuals, so instead of 366 things, that becomes 732 items from our possession.  This idea came to us as we have been talking about God's plan for our lives and wanting to see what He has in store for us.  We began talking about the things that get in the way of us serving the Lord, and material possessions came up in that discussion.  We both felt convicted that we were allowing the things in our possession to own us instead of owning them, and that is where this idea stemmed from.  Our plan is to go into each day thoughtfully and prayerfully to determine what must go. We have already discussed how things that we would get rid of anyway are not part of the deal either... (example: Oh look! Here is a pair of holey socks, they are today and tomorrow's items to get rid of.) Again, the idea is that as things leave our house, we can begin to focus on what God has for us and hopefully remove some of those obstacles hindering our relationship with Him and ultimately with each other.

2. I am calling this one, Spare Change... not trademarked by me, as I am pretty sure someone already has done this, but I'm going to give it a run anyway.  The idea here is that I will pick up any and all loose change and money that is lost on the ground.  I mean, how much of that stuff do you see all over the place anyway, and most of the time, don't pick it up either?... This money, since it already doesn't belong to me, will be given to some charity at the end of the year... I have already been thinking of some charities, like RiceBowls.org, but am still open to suggestion.  I am really interested to see how much money people around me are giving away without ever knowing it...

I am sure there will be some other things on the horizon for us, but those are still TBD...  As you can tell, the blog still needs a LOT of work, but we'll get there too...

In the meantime, what are you planning for the year ahead?  (Let's share some ideas!!!)
